How to Shop Designer Secondhand Online in NZ (Without Getting Caught Out)
Share
There's a particular kind of happy that comes from finding a Johnny Was silk top or a COS wool knit for a fraction of what it cost new. Shopping designer secondhand online is one of the best ways to build a wardrobe that lasts, but you can't feel the fabric or try it on first, so it helps to know what to look for.
We list new preloved pieces at The Value Junction every week from our base in Waiuku, and we check every item by hand before it goes up. Here's what we'd tell a friend who asked how to shop designer secondhand online without getting caught out.
1. Read the fabric label, not just the brand name
A good label is nice, but the fabric is what decides how a piece wears, washes and feels. Natural fibres like silk, merino, wool, cotton and linen tend to age well and hold their shape. When a listing shows the composition (for example 80% wool, 10% alpaca), that tells you far more than the brand name alone.
Every TVJ listing includes the material breakdown from the garment's care label, so you know what you're getting before it lands at your door.
2. Look for honest condition notes, and photos of any flaws
No preloved piece is perfect, and a good seller won't pretend it is. Be wary of listings that just say "great condition" with no detail. What you want is a clear grade plus a photo of anything worth knowing about: a small mark, a little pilling, a loose thread.
We grade everything as Excellent, Good or Average used condition and photograph the flaws. A tiny mark on a $15 Sass & Bide top is a fair trade. You just deserve to know about it up front.
3. Check measurements, not just the size on the tag
Sizing jumps around between brands, decades and countries. An Australian size 10, a UK 10 and a US 10 are not the same thing, and plenty of labels use S/M/L with their own idea of what that means. Where it matters, check the underarm-to-underarm or waist measurement and compare it with something you already own that fits well.
If a listing doesn't show the measurement you need, ask. We're happy to grab the tape measure.
4. Know what "good value" looks like for each label
Preloved prices should reflect the brand, the fabric and the condition. A silk designer top in excellent condition is worth more than a fast-fashion tee with a few marks, and that's fair. The win is paying a sensible preloved price for something made to last, instead of full retail for something that won't.
5. Think about care before you buy
Natural fibres reward a little care. Wool and merino like a cool gentle wash and drying flat. Silk prefers a hand wash or a delicate cycle. A fabric shaver sorts out light pilling on knits in minutes. If you're not up for hand washing, that's worth knowing before you fall for a silk blouse.
6. Remember: every piece is one of one
Secondhand stock isn't restocked. When a piece sells, it's gone, and there usually isn't another in your size waiting in a warehouse. If something ticks your boxes, it's worth deciding sooner rather than later.
