Twelve-year-old Artemis Fowl is brilliant, wealthy and determined to restore his family’s fortunes through a plan few adults would even imagine. After discovering that fairies are real, he sets his sights on their gold and kidnaps Captain Holly Short of the Lower Elements Police. What he has not fully anticipated is the determination, technology and ingenuity of the underground world he has challenged. With his formidable bodyguard Butler beside him, Artemis prepares for a contest in which magic meets strategy and neither side is willing to surrender. Eoin Colfer’s opening Artemis Fowl adventure combines fantasy, humour and a tightly plotted battle of wits, introducing an unusual young antihero whose cleverness is both his greatest advantage and a dangerous invitation to overconfidence.
