Eight-year-old Simon Shooter finds a black puppy abandoned in a dustbin and decides to rescue it. Keeping the dog means facing the objections of Aunt Marthe, but the companionship soon becomes important to a boy dealing with the difficulties of his own world. The puppy brings affection and adventure, drawing Simon into problems that test his resourcefulness and determination. When the dog is in danger of being lost to him, the bond between them gives him a reason to act. Kit Higson's children's novel combines the appeal of an animal friendship with the challenges of growing up, following a young boy who refuses to give up on the creature he has saved.
