Harriet Manners can explain an impressive assortment of facts, but she cannot work out why fitting in at school seems so difficult. When a modelling opportunity unexpectedly comes her way, she sees a chance to become someone entirely different. The fashion world, however, has its own bewildering rules, and Harriet's intelligence does not prevent her from stumbling through its unfamiliar situations. As she pursues the promise of reinvention, friendships, expectations and her own awkwardness become increasingly difficult to manage. Holly Smale's first Geek Girl novel combines comic mishaps with a warm exploration of belonging and identity. Harriet's adventure asks whether changing how others see you can really solve the problem of learning to feel comfortable with yourself.
