Editor Mariam Khan started this anthology after growing frustrated hearing Muslim women discussed by people who were neither Muslim nor women. In response, she gathered seventeen Muslim women writers, from activists to journalists to playwrights, to speak candidly in their own voices about faith, the hijab, love, divorce, queer identity, sex and feminism, alongside the everyday reality of navigating both a sometimes disapproving community and a broader culture shaped by Islamophobia.
