A powerful and thought-provoking German literary novella

Very Good Condition – clean pages with light shelf wear only.

The meticulously composed novella "Cat and Mouse" surprised critics in 1961: Grass, whose trademark since "The Tin Drum" had been his almost untamable abundance, revealed himself as a master of the short form, of literary chamber music. Looking back from 1959, Pilenz tells the story of his admired and despised classmate Mahlke in wartime Danzig, whose disproportionately large Adam's apple makes him an outsider. Mahlke wages a desperate battle for integration, for closing the existential rift between "cat and mouse," and yet, in his victory, he ultimately fails. Even the Knight's Cross, from which he hopes to find redemption by covering his nakedness—a perversion of the times—does not bring him peace with the world.
