Tessa discovers that letting a dragon out is not quite as simple as trusting its promise to return to its cage. The Magician has firm views about dragons, and this small encounter leads to a lesson in their unpredictable behaviour. Sheila McCullagh's story belongs to Stage 2 of Ladybird's Puddle Lane reading programme, with illustrations by Jon Davis. Designed for an adult and child to share, the book combines the magical setting of Puddle Lane with short passages that young readers can attempt for themselves. Its illustrated story and repeated language provide opportunities to follow the action, recognise familiar words and talk about what the characters might do next.
