In 1960s Tripoli, Michele Balistreri grows up amid family secrets, violent events and the shifting politics surrounding Libya's future. His mother's death and a bond forged with a childhood friend leave marks that will follow him for decades. By 1982, he is a damaged detective in Rome, taking refuge in gambling, drink and casual relationships. The death of a South American student and his connection with rising television star Claudia Teodori draw him into an investigation with unexpected roots. Moving between the two periods, Roberto Costantini builds a crime novel in which private memories and public power are intertwined, and the past refuses to remain safely buried.
