The Gropes by Tom Sharpe

An eccentric family turns inheritance into outrageous farce

Very Good Condition - Light cover rubbing, minor edge/corner creases and browned page edges.

The Gropes have occupied their Northumberland home for centuries, preserving a family way of life that has little in common with the world beyond the estate. Strong-willed women dominate the household and take a determined interest in ensuring its future. When timid teenager Esmond is drawn into their plans and taken to Grope Hall, his inability to escape sets off a succession of increasingly absurd events. Tom Sharpe turns a secluded English family into the centre of a dark comic spectacle, combining ancestral pride, extreme personalities and disastrous interference. The Gropes is a farce about people pursuing their desires with little concern for the consequences, until everyone around them is caught in the resulting chaos.
