Faith and duty collide in classical French tragedy
Vintage Fair Condition - Ex-library. Boards heavily rubbed/stained, edges/corners worn with exposed card, spine ends frayed. Pages browned/spotted, hinges worn. Published 1913.
Pierre Corneille’s tragedy places religious conviction at the centre of a conflict involving marriage, political authority and personal loyalty. In Roman Armenia, Polyeucte’s commitment to Christianity threatens the security expected of his position and brings him into opposition with the established order. His wife Pauline is caught between love for her husband, duty towards her father and the return of a former suitor, making private feeling inseparable from the demands of public life. Written in French verse, the play explores the cost of remaining faithful to a belief when compromise appears to offer safety. This French-language Hachette edition includes literary and philological notes, analysis and introductory material by L. Petit de Julleville, supporting close reading of Corneille’s language and dramatic construction.
