Mistaken identities set love and mischief in motion

Shipwrecked in Illyria and believing her twin brother lost, Viola disguises herself as a young man and enters the service of Duke Orsino. Sent to plead his love to Olivia, she becomes caught in a tangle of affections that her disguise makes increasingly difficult to resolve. Elsewhere in Olivia’s household, jokes, drinking and resentment produce a scheme against the self-important Malvolio, whose hopes make him vulnerable to an elaborate deception. William Shakespeare brings romance and comedy together with moments of loneliness, longing and cruelty, allowing the festive confusion to expose feelings that everyday appearances conceal. Edited by Evelyn Smith, this edition presents a play in which language, performance and mistaken assumptions repeatedly change what characters believe they know about themselves and one another.
