A family sets out to find a bear, certain that they can manage whatever lies ahead. Long grass, a cold river, thick mud and other obstacles turn the expedition into a sequence of noisy, energetic challenges. Michael Rosen's rhythmic retelling invites listeners to join the repeated phrases and imitate the sounds of each landscape, while Helen Oxenbury's illustrations carry the travellers from familiar ground towards a much more alarming discovery. The return journey gives the story a wonderfully comic change of pace. By turns bold, suspenseful and reassuring, this much-loved picture book makes an adventure out of movement, sound and shared imagination, offering children and adults a read-aloud experience that rewards joining in as enthusiastically as the characters themselves.
